I'm going to do a scarf joint neck. But I don't have any materials yet. So it's hard to visualize with out holding stuff in my hands,,,lol

1. Do I need to use anything to hold downward tension against the nut. Or does the 15* angle take care of that for me. I think I still might need something to align the strings from the nut to the tuners. So is it a moot point.

2. Does the 15* scarf joint do the same thing as making a 1-3 degree angle at the bottom of the neck. If I'm understanding correctly I would not need to do both. Is that right.

3. I want a wider head. Would it be ok to just make it out of a solid piece. Or should pieces be added for strength.

4. Is there a preference for head thickness. I'm using an old rustic box so I want to try to find some old looking used tuners. Are there different requirements for tuners.

5. Is it ok to use old turners. Or could they be wore out.

I guess that's enough for now. That will give me something to think about while I'm waiting on my box to get here,,,lol.

Um well,1. The angle of the scarf joint will provide enough "break angle" over the nut. You will need either slots in the nut or some means of lining the strings up.

2. that 1-3 degree back angle is something else. It allows more space between where the stings cross the bridge/saddle so you can use a taller bridge/have more break angle from the bridge to the tail end of the strings.

3.You can make a wider heard out of a solid piece but I think it will really complicate making the scarf joint. MOst make the scarf joint(out of 1x2 typical) then glue on "wings "to mde the head wider and then cut to the desired shape.

4. Must tuners, like the cheap ones from Gitty will just go through a 1x2 enough to attach strings. Thinning down by about 1/4" will give more room on the tuner shaft for the string. (and may be way more work than you hoped for depending on the tools you have!)

5. Old tuners are fine if they still work well or just need oil. If they don't work well, then I'd say they are more trouble than they are worth.
