You may remember a few weeks back Wayfinder, dazzled us all with his thrift store Hifi speaker mod. You may also remember my own thread about playing a CBG through a vintage Hifi. Both those things eventually lead me to my new system for a super clean CBG sound.
The story starts with me looking for a Hifi speaker to turn into an Amp. A few weeks before, I had hooked up my CB Banjo to my inherited vintage Hifi, and having been impressed with the sound decided that Wayfinder was on to something with the Hifi sound.
Then I saw a vintage speaker that was for sale, I had seen an article several years before about the Quad 57 speakers and had lusted after them ever since, but a working pair was out of my price range, as these electrostatic speakers were made from the 1950's and considered a classic design.
I was able to buy the single speaker and set about making a CB Amp Head from a Guitar Fuel MAH5 kit, which I added a line out 1/4 inch Jack instead of hooking up a regular speaker. I wired up a lead consisting of a 1/4 inch Jack soldered to a twin Hifi cable one lead on the positive tang and the other on the ground. Each end was then fitted with a Banana Plug. This was plugged into a device made specifically for this speaker by a modern day company specialising in these speakers. This device basically stops the Speaker from frying a modern amp circuit. This was then plugged into the back of the speaker (which needs its own juice supply) and then hooked up my Amp Head and CB BANJO.
The speaker sounds so realistic that it is like hearing the banjo playing acoustically, even though it has a single coil mag pick up, the most fabulous clean sound. The Amp has several different settings for overdrive and gain, but I don't use them on this speaker, they don't do it justice!
There is a pic of the modern adapter below and more pics will be added on my homepage here on the forum.

It's crazy looking isn't it? It is called a Quad ESL 57, and it was first produced in 1957. It is an electrostatic speaker, which means that it works in an entirely different way to a regular speaker. Inside the flat panel (the love seat back, as you put it, are three panels of stretched polymer film (essentially cling film like you put on your sandwiches to keep them fresh)! This is coated in a slightly conductive material, which is pulled and pushed by electrostatic power (ie like static on your hair).
It is a British design that is considered to be a design classic, although it is considered to have several flaws, including a lack of volume, and can be very temperamental.
I have found that both these things are true, but when worked in the proper way it gives fabulous reproduction of sound, if a little light on bass.
Hope this helps, for more details search Quad ESL 57 on Wikipedia

All the best from Bill. :D

Alas, no video but a cheap and nasty ipod recording of "Baby O" now on my CBN home page.

All the best from Bill. :D
