Regular magnetic pickups haven't always worked well with acoustic strings. The lower wound strings have weaker output than the higher solid strings. Results are solid strings that are considerably louder than the wound strings.

Electric guitar strings are better suited for electro magnetic pickups. The steel strings are more evenly matched in output. It's just the nature of steel strings over bronze strings.

Several companies have tried to design an electro magnetic pickup to overcome the problem with unbalanced output from bronze strings by changing the pole types. Some companies used a single rail pole or a bar magnet as a pole instead of individual poles. Some of those designs worked well(Seymour Duncan Acoustic Tube Pickup). Others made a pickup with individual poles that had shortened the pole or removed the pole under the solid G and B strings to balance things out.

Along came the Flat style humbucker. I had asked a seller of these pickups if they worked well with acoustic strings? The seller said he didn't know cause he hadn't tried it. I got a Flatcat pickup recently and installed it on a acoustic 4 string CBG. It has 3 wound strings and 1 solid string made of Bronze and tuned G/D/G/B. They all sound great and balanced, even the high B doesn't overpower the other wound strings.

So, if anyone out there wanted a electro magnetic pickup that works great with acoustic guitars and bronze strings and doesn't cost a small fortune or need a preamp, get one of these flatpups.

I wired it to 500k volume and tone pots with a .022 cap. You may want to change pot or cap values depending on the type of box, wood tone or personal tastes. Remember that 250k pots will be darker toned for a humbucker or higher value caps(.033, .047, .052) will be darker toned.
