Just a quick one - has anyone used jumbo fret wire on a CBG? I've used medium on all my builds to date, but fancied trying something different.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

I've only used medium.

Here's a thought: do it. Why not? Jumbo fret wire is used on commercial gits all the time. Why not use it on a CBG?

Now, you wanna have some real fun? Jumbo fret wire, AND a scalloped neck.

Hehehehehe...

I would think as long as you have a longer scale neck (23" and up) jumbo frets will be fine. On short scale builds the fret spacing would be a little tight on the higher frets.

Not sure what the precise definition of 'Jumbo' is, but I used 3mm bronze wire on the Old Timer and it looks and plays great.  Bronze wire is not cheap, though.

Cheapest place I have found for the UK is snowcauldron on eBay

Postage is free for more strips so best to buy at least a couple of strips to offset postage costs.

I use these to supply my fret wire I find the straight  easier to fret with rather than the bent that comes off the roll .

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I will give it a go for one of my 24.75" scale builds. David - thanks for the link but I use those guys already!

I have tried it and Robert Jones hit the nail on the head.  Use it on longer scales.  Nothing shorter than 24 inch and 25 and up is better.

I've got Van Gent jumbo wire in stock...just depends on what you like. As for the scale length, it really won't cause problems you are building really short scale instruments like mandolin or uke (when I'd normally go for  for skinny wire)...and on regular scale instruments down to around 20" scale you won't really notice it getting tight even when you get up to the dusty end above the 20th fret.
