I feel greatful to have found this site and a community that cares for the production of this great art form and a community, that I see, really care about each other. That is what this site means to me, even though I’m new I have been graciously welcomed. Thank you all

JL,

I couldn't agree more, and you pretty well nailed it on the head. Before I continue, it's important for me to express a sincere apology to anyone who may have been irked at my response to the video, in that it has caused some very awful bantering, both offensive and defensive.

Being a member of Nation has been educational and life changing for me. It has given me a hobby that sometimes results in monetary return for the hard work put into a project.

Being a member of Nation has been educational and life changing for me. It has given me a hobby that sometimes results in monetary return for the hard work put into a project.

But this is not why this place is important to me. I have created friendships with some very nice people who share similar views and passions.

Taking part in this site has also afforded the opportunity to learn when I was new, and to share and help when others are looking for answers once I had enough experience to warrant a reply.

So in closing, perhaps we can all agree that this issue is over and it's time to move on to sharing and caring.

On the one hand we have the desire as a group to dig in and find out how it works, share the knowledge, as evidenced by the EXTENSIVE thread on the induction pickup.

On the other hand we have a feeling of family and protectiveness toward each other, and that covers the folks that achieve making some decent coin at selling their wares, wanting to protect their profitability.

Its a bit of a trick to find the comfortable path between the two, sharing as much as we can but still supporting those who sell i.e. we chat a lot about how to build for ourselves what gitty sells already built.

I hate to break it to you, but it's kind of like looking back in time and watching cavemen arguing over someones right to a flint napping technique. How can people be so supportive of the rest of the building process but when it comes to pickups it's such a freakin' soap opera!

Cool story. Many years ago a CBN/Clubhouse member really wanted to know how I made my pickups - EVERY DETAIL. He (and his bandmate) travelled almost 2 hours to my shop and still pestered me, after a cool jam. I relented and made one from scratch for him.

Shortly after, he was online boasting that he knew the secret to my pickups and had some for sale cheaper than me, and even posted a pic of one on a copy of a copper pipe git he saw me building in my shop.

Little did he know, I suspected as much and I told him all the wrong specs - wire size, number of winds, what I wrapped around the magnets, potting and even tension on my winds.

I've been a CBG guru since the 90's, Noobs might not know me. Created my first pup, the Tesla Transducer (the very first CBG pickup for sale) in 2003 and it still helps pay the rent. In 2005 I introduced the Stonehenge magnetic CBG pickup based on pups in the guitar I made for the Honey Dripper movie (years before CBN). A few years later the DownUnder drop-in mag CBG pup. Lots of other pickup/bridge/tailpiece combos over the years (Flatbed, Panama Red, Happy Ending, Gold…

I make a lot of my living on CBG pickup sales and instruments, but I also educate anyone on how to make your own all the time. Elmar has a vid on how he makes his. I do believe it's respectful to acknowledge the original maker, but I gave up on that almost 15 years ago when cheaper copies started showing up claiming to be original.

CBN (and Handmade Music Clubhouse) are about sharing ideas and helping others. I've been totally ripped off on my designs, and one guy called me out on eBay and cut my price in half for a perfect copy, but that's life... Folks still buy mine and still buy Elmar's creations. I still answer CBG questions every day. Can't let it bother you.

I have one of Elmar's very first Flatpups, and we went back and forth on his awesome idea many years ago. It's nice to be recognized as the inventor, but after many years and many copies it just doesn't matter anymore - nothing to do about it. Keep doing what you do and keep innovating. Elmar is a class act!

(BTW, I'm member #1 here at the Nation)
