I'm Shane Speal & I'll be filming more "How To Play CBG" vids. Post lesson requests and questions here.

I'm Shane Speal, the guy who started this website a few years ago.  Lately, I've been filming simple "How to Play Cigar Box Guitar" videos to help everyone get better on these awesome instruments.

If you've missed the video links, I've compiled everything into one Youtube playlist at

 http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpET_ZZI7rmROAInFkbD9szyuIXn2zM-T

I've got a definite style to my playing and have learned lots of tricks and cool short-cuts since I started playing these things almost 20 years ago.  Use this forum for the following:

  • What type of lessons would you like to learn?
  • Do you have any questions on the videos already posted?
  • If you're a fan of my music, are there any of my songs that you want explained?

Can you do me one favor?  Can you post the following status on your Facebook today:

Have you seen the new video series, "How to Play Cigar Box Guitar?" Easy stuff to learn. Cool licks that sound great. Link: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpET_ZZI7rmROAInFkbD9szyuIXn2zM-T

Ok, that's all.  Ask away.  Trolling comments and threadjacks will be deleted

Keep up the good fight, Mr Shane. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

very good. I will check them out and learn to play better! Thanks.

hey shane, what about a lesson on this?

keep on rockin'!

C# Merle:  Some of those licks come straight from the 3 String Secrets lesson except the tuning is much higher (I think it was tuned in the key of C).   I played my Kurt Schoen "Turbodiddley" cigar box guitar on I Don't Live Today.  I need to get some new strings on it and I'll do a lesson with it soon.

Yup, I have questions: What are all the tunings you have on the 3 strings you have? I saw from the video introducing your arsenal there was a git tuned to C. What are those strings tuned to?

Is there a 3 or 4 string equivalent to a dropped D?

Colin, you're inspiring a video lesson!  Thank you!  I'll plan out the concept and film it this week.

Drop D:  String your cigar box guitar with EAD strings.  Tune it DAD

Drop C:  String your cigar box guitar with EAD strings.  Tune it CGC

My baritone cigar box guitars are tuned CGC

thanks.

The main complaint I have against CBN is that almost all the videos are stored on Youtube, com which is banned in China, so expats like myself can not see most the CBG videos produced by CBN members. There are a few videos which I can seem, and I suspect they are being hosted by CBN. Wish I could get your training videos hosted the same way so I could watch them here in China. [I appreciate your efforts in making the videos. Keep up the good work.]

-Rand.

Youtube is blocked in China?  Damn!  Maybe I can eventually make the original files available for download.

Four new videos added today... four part series on "How to Play the Diddley Bow"

Shane:

Very well done, Thanks for taking the time and the effort to do this
