Man, making your own pickups is labor intensive! I only got this far after breaking open a "wall wart" dc adapter, breaking out the transformer, getting the skinny wire out, snipping an altoid box, winding a thousand wraps of wire... Phew! Just have to wrap some electrical tape around it and solder to an input jack....

Look fwd to hearing about your experimentation Daryll.
Well I made a wire loop from one core of 3 core elec wire. The core has 7 strands of copper wire. All up bout 4mm in combined diameter. The volume was very good. With treble and mid at zero and bass at 3 o clock. Was very clear and not much hum. I luv a bassy sound, comes from switchin over from bass playing to a six stringer ages ago.I should add that the made up copper loop is used with insulation intact. Except at join ends. This is a great experience. I knew next to nothing bout pickup stuff till I got into CBG. The info in this place is priceless. Think I will whack this setup in my little 2nd build cbg tomorrow and see how she runs. Bonza. Jonno.

P.s Heck I know I am posting heaps but I feel like a pig in #$it. Like a kid let loose in a candy store. Woooohooooo
G'day Way. I tried your suggestion of trying sound experiment with a loop of the core wire I used before but without insulation. I ensured that I used the same core ( black, 7 strand) and the same length as before. Amp settings the same. I noticed No appreciable difference between loop with insulation on and loop stripped bare.
Next I made a same length loop of oxygen free copper audio cable I had layin around. Bout the same diameter as elec core I used before but made up of more strands. Maybe 40 or 50. As before I tried it with insulation on and stripped of insulation. The sound for both was about the same as the elec core trial. Interesting. I have a huge roll of the stuff. Still be interested to try a nice big fat juicy loop of single copper though. Like in Turtleheads vid. Hard to come by. Cheers. Jonno
Lol. After reading more of the alumitone thread and the licence plate as a pickup, I realise I'm not bringing anything new to the table with these ravings about what I am trying out. I guess I just have to make a decision to use the turtlehead copper loop + magnets + primary coil of trannie or Daryll's just the trannie by itself approach. The sound was adequate with both ways. Decisions, decisions. Hmmm. Using thr trannie no magnet approach would involve chops to thru neck and then bracing that up, which in my case is a tad more difficult coz my neck thru is half round. Of course I know the whole idea of the induction pup is that you don't have to have the tran core in the position of an old school mag pickup but I'm not quite up to speed about optimum trannie placement vis a vis aluminiun plate. Rave on Jonno. Rave on
Onya Way. I looked for the thickest single strand copper wire in the electrical section at Bunnnings (huge) the other day. Maybe I should try a dedicated electrician supply place. There's one not far away.As mentioned, an electrinics store I tried had zilch real thick wire.I really want to try a real thick single strand loop, as the multi strand stuff seems like just a wound coil setup.
Hmm. Wonder what Richard who started this thread is up to. Beaverin away on a secret pickup uh he he he
I noticed some adhesive copper tape in the garden pest section. Used to repel snails.A 4 metre long x 3cm wide roll for around 9 bucks. Might give it a whirl after I try a bit of aluminium I bought this arvo. Cheers. Jonno
Gotcha. I ended up using the 7 strand elec core wire + mags + trannie coil. I have popped it in my 2nd build ( which I have made a post about.)Cheers Way. Jonno
