What would be the best, cheapist way to do some home recording, get it on a laptop and record it to a cd......I was thinking abut going old school and just recording onto tape to get that anolog feel and then recording onto my laptop through the mic.  I kinda want that lo-fi sound, plus, I don't want to have to mic like everything under the sun.  I have my karioke machine that has tape decks, I thought about using it, but I use it for my main mic and harmonica.  I am kinda just thinking about one peizo mic in the center and picking up just me and my voice and amp, but I kinda want to add the drums in their too........this mind you is on a budget and is in the middle of my house that is not a studio by any means....I will have to do the recordings here and there when I get the chance for low background noise.

I use Cool Edit Pro because a friend upgraded and gave it to me. It works pretty well for my applications (take a listen on my page). I know you said you're on a budget but for anyone else reading this: for work I was issued a Zoom H2 that I record my classes with and send them to my supervisor for review. This is an extremely portable little gadget that is easy to use with great quality. I recorded a violin recital that I accompanied and it turned out great! If anyone is looking for a good, portable device that doesn't cost a bundle. This is it. I've also used it as a condenser mic right into my computer. Very versatile.
Best of all it's free and 1 of the best out there.
