Does Anyone suggest good alternatives to fret wire?

I've been using salvaged copper electrical wire and brass craft wire, both straightened by clamping one end in a vise and pulling on the other with a pair of pliers until just before I have an aneurysm.  I glue it down with a rubberized super glue that seems to resist shearing and impact better than the conventional stuff.
