Has anyone found an alternative to fret dressing files. I am wanting something to restore the profile after fret leveling. I realize these file are available from Stew-Mac, just looking for something more economical.

Hmmmmm. Nothing comes to mind. I would be in the wrong if I suggested anything I thought was a substitute.

Back in the old days before recrowning files, they used a triangular file. You would move the file over each side of the fret to simulate a curve. You can get them at any hardware store for cheap. You should grind down the triangular edges a bit to keep from damaging the fret board.

On that note, I have seen (recently) a tip that uses cut pieces of soda can as fretboard shields.

I bought an actual end dressing file off ebay for about what half stewmac charges.
